Deadly Tornado Outbreak Claims 27 Lives as Severe Weather Ravages Midwest and East

Severe storms across several states have resulted in at least 27 deaths, stretching from the Heartland to the East Coast, with more dangerous weather expected Saturday. Officials warn residents to remain alert.

Kentucky faced the brunt of the devastation, with 18 fatalities confirmed. Missouri suffered seven deaths, while Virginia reported two people killed when trees fell on vehicles during the storm.

Most of Kentucky’s deaths were centered in Laurel County, about 130 miles southeast of Louisville. This area saw extensive destruction, with entire neighborhoods damaged or destroyed by powerful tornadoes.

Governor Andy Beshear visited the affected regions, describing the damage as both visible and deeply felt. “The destruction is not just something you see, it’s something you feel,” he told reporters.

Beshear had issued a state of emergency ahead of the storm, saying this event ranks among the worst he’s experienced as governor in terms of human loss and property damage.

Victims ranged from young adults to seniors, with ages between 25 and 76. At least 12 of the fatalities involved people in their 60s and 70s, highlighting the widespread impact.

Among the deceased was Maj. Roger Leslie Leatherman of the Laurel County Fire Department, who served the community for nearly four decades and died heroically in the line of duty.

In the city of London, Kentucky, entire blocks were devastated. Residents spent the day sorting through the rubble after homes were torn apart in the middle of the night.

Lonnie Nantz, 78, recounted his terrifying experience holding his wife as their house collapsed around them. His property was heavily damaged, with debris scattered throughout his yard.

In Missouri, a powerful tornado struck St. Louis Friday afternoon. Rated EF-3 by the National Weather Service, winds reached up to 140 mph, ripping roofs off homes and destroying buildings.

St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer described the storm as one of the worst in the city’s history, noting the heartbreaking loss of life and extensive property damage.

Over 462,000 power outages were reported from Michigan to Tennessee. In total, 26 tornadoes touched down across Kentucky, Indiana, Missouri, Illinois, and New Jersey, with hail and damaging winds also reported.
