Fallen Cardinal: Becciu Steps Back from Papal Conclave Amid Scandal

Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu, once a towering presence in the Vatican’s inner circle, has formally announced that he will not participate in the upcoming conclave to choose the next pope. Convicted of financial crimes by the Vatican’s criminal court, Becciu stated on Tuesday that he would respect the wishes of Pope Francis and step aside. Despite maintaining his innocence, he emphasized his obedience to papal authority, saying, “I have decided to obey, as I have always done, Pope Francis’ will not to enter the Conclave.”

Becciu's fall from grace began in 2020, when Pope Francis demanded his resignation amid a major financial scandal. Accused of embezzlement and misuse of church funds, Becciu was later convicted in 2023 and sentenced to five and a half years in prison. He has remained in the Vatican while appealing the decision, awaiting a final verdict on his legal fate.

Surprisingly, just a week before withdrawing, Becciu had expressed confidence about joining the conclave. Speaking to a Sardinian newspaper, he insisted there was no formal order preventing him from participating, suggesting he still saw himself as eligible. However, this confidence soon faded, and he publicly reversed course, aligning himself with the pope’s decision and stepping back from the highly secretive election process.

The conclave, scheduled for May 7, comes after the recent passing of the reigning pope. With 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide watching closely, the gathering of cardinals is one of the most significant events in the Church. Becciu’s absence removes a once-powerful voice from the room—one who was deeply involved in Church governance and Vatican politics for years.

Before his conviction, Becciu served as the sostituto in the Secretariat of State, essentially acting as the pope’s chief of staff. This role placed him at the heart of Vatican operations, giving him extraordinary influence over administrative matters. Later, he was reassigned to lead the department in charge of canonizing saints, a position he ultimately lost after his financial dealings came under scrutiny.

With Becciu now sidelined, the conclave will proceed without one of its most controversial figures. His case serves as a stark example of the challenges Pope Francis faces in reforming Vatican finances and enforcing accountability at the highest levels of the Church. For many, Becciu’s story marks a turning point in how the Church confronts internal corruption and reaffirms the gravity of the decisions that lie ahead.
