Liam Delap Joins Chelsea in £30m Deal Following Ipswich Relegation
Chelsea have completed the signing of Liam Delap from Ipswich Town in a transfer worth £30 million. The 22-year-old striker agreed to a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge after the Blues activated a relegation clause in his Ipswich deal. Chelsea will pay £20 million upfront, with Ipswich securing a future sell-on percentage.
Delap, a standout performer last season with 12 goals in 37 games, attracted attention from several Premier League clubs. Manchester United, Everton, and Newcastle were all in pursuit, but Chelsea’s ambition and new head coach Enzo Maresca convinced the young England international to join. Delap praised the club’s trajectory and potential.
Before his stint at Ipswich, Delap emerged from Manchester City’s academy and had loan spells at Stoke City, Preston North End, and Hull City. He made only two Premier League appearances for City and scored once in the League Cup. His father, Rory Delap, is a former Republic of Ireland international.
Reflecting on his time at Portman Road, Delap expressed deep appreciation for Ipswich. He highlighted the valuable support from manager Kieran McKenna and the fan base, calling it the ideal environment for gaining top-level experience. He acknowledged his growth and said he would always be grateful for the club’s role in his career.
Chelsea, who recently won the UEFA Conference League, are set to compete in the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States later this month. This extended tournament likely rules Delap out of England’s U21 Euros squad, where he had been named for training ahead of the competition in Slovenia.
The Blues are not done with their transfer business. Talks with AC Milan continue over goalkeeper Mike Maignan, although there’s a gap in valuation. Chelsea are also reportedly considering a move for Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens, who previously spent time in the club’s academy.
