Tragedy in Gateshead: Fourteen Children Arrested After Teen Dies in Abandoned Site Fire
A horrifying fire that broke out at an abandoned industrial unit in Gateshead has led to the arrest of 14 children, following the death of a 14-year-old boy. The incident occurred on Friday evening at the Fairfield Industrial Park in the Bill Quay area. Authorities confirmed that the fire was eventually put out, but the remains of a boy, believed to be Layton Carr who had recently been reported missing, were discovered inside the building.
Northumbria Police reported that eleven boys and three girls, aged between 11 and 14, were taken into custody on suspicion of manslaughter. The arrests were made in connection with the fire and the tragic loss of the teenager’s life. All of the suspects remain in police custody as inquiries continue.
The site of the fire, a 15-acre industrial property on the southern bank of the River Tyne, had become derelict in recent years. With a damaged gatehouse and several abandoned structures, the area had become easily accessible and potentially hazardous. Police received the first emergency calls shortly after 8 p.m. BST on the night of the incident.
Detectives have emphasized that their investigation is still in its preliminary stages, and they are urging the public to avoid speculation as they piece together what happened. The cause of the fire and the exact circumstances leading to the boy’s death remain under review, and forensic teams are working on-site.
Detective Chief Inspector Louise Jenkins described the incident as a deeply saddening tragedy. She expressed condolences to Layton Carr’s family and assured that specially trained officers would continue providing support to them during this painful time. She also stressed that a police cordon and presence will remain at the scene to aid in the investigation and provide community reassurance.
Authorities are appealing to anyone who might have witnessed the fire or have relevant information to come forward. Police are determined to uncover the full story and ensure accountability while offering support to those affected by the heartbreaking event.
