Crypto Under Siege: Paris Kidnapping Adds to Wave of Ransom Crimes
French authorities rescued a man on Saturday who had been abducted two days earlier in a disturbing ransom scheme linked to the crypto industry. During his captivity, one of the man’s fingers was cut off by his captors.
The victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, was kidnapped Thursday by four men wearing ski masks on a Parisian street. He was held in a rented Airbnb roughly 12 miles outside the city.
To pressure his family, the kidnappers sent a horrific video showing the victim’s severed finger and demanded a ransom worth millions of euros.
Police arrested five individuals between the ages of 23 and 27 in connection with the case. Prosecutors have confirmed that a full investigation is underway, focused on extortion and gang activity.
This harrowing case mirrors other recent incidents involving cryptocurrency figures. In January, Ledger’s co-founder David Balland and his wife were abducted and tortured in similar fashion, with Balland’s finger also severed.
He and his wife were eventually rescued after police tracked the assailants. A similar case unfolded a month earlier in Belgium, involving the wife of crypto investor Stéphane Winkel, who was rescued after a car chase.
Experts believe the crimes may be connected, pointing to identical methods used by the perpetrators. However, official confirmation about a single organized group behind the kidnappings is still pending as investigations continue.
