Shock in Nairobi: Kenyan MP Gunned Down in Apparent Targeted Hit

In a disturbing turn of events, Kenyan lawmaker Charles Were was fatally shot on Wednesday evening in what authorities believe was a calculated and premeditated attack. The incident occurred while Were was stopped at a traffic light on Ngong Road in Nairobi, around 7:30 p.m.

Witnesses reported that the attacker was riding as a passenger on a motorcycle that approached Were's vehicle. The gunman dismounted, fired multiple shots at the passenger side of the vehicle, and quickly fled the scene by jumping back on the motorcycle.

The police, in a statement released later that night, emphasized the deliberate nature of the act. “The pillion passenger approached the vehicle and fired shots before jumping back onto the motorcycle and speeding away. The nature of this crime appears to be both targeted and premeditated,” the statement read.

Political assassinations are rare in Kenya, which is considered one of the more stable nations in East Africa despite its proximity to regions affected by civil unrest. The killing has raised serious concerns about the safety of public officials and the country’s political climate.

Charles Were was a member of the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), led by veteran politician Raila Odinga. Odinga, in a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), condemned the act, stating, “Were is no more; mercilessly and in cold blood, gunned down by an assassin in Nairobi this evening.”

The attack brings new tensions to Kenya’s political landscape. While Odinga initially challenged the 2022 presidential election results, citing electoral irregularities, he and some allies have recently engaged in dialogue with President William Ruto's administration to collaborate on key national issues.

As the investigation into Were’s assassination unfolds, Kenyans await clarity and justice. The killing not only marks a tragic loss but also casts a shadow over the country’s efforts to maintain unity and political stability.
