Democrats Reflect on Biden’s Candidacy and Its Political Fallout
A growing chorus of Democratic leaders is acknowledging mistakes made during the last presidential election, particularly the decision to back President Joe Biden’s reelection bid despite growing concerns about his age and cognitive fitness. Many now admit that his delayed withdrawal from the race had detrimental effects on the party’s momentum and unity.
The book Original Sin by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson reignited debate by accusing Biden’s inner circle of concealing his decline. The book presents examples like Biden allegedly not recognizing actor George Clooney, raising questions about whether the president’s condition was adequately disclosed before the election.
Rep. Ro Khanna of California, a previous Biden supporter, has publicly reversed his stance, admitting the party should have pursued an open primary. He stated that Biden appeared coherent during interactions but now believes the campaign misjudged the situation and missed an opportunity for broader democratic engagement.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, another rising Democratic figure, said Biden’s exit from the race should have come earlier than July. He also suggested Kamala Harris’s campaign could have helped more by distinguishing her platform from Biden’s legacy, which might have energized more skeptical Democratic voters.
Pete Buttigieg, former transportation secretary and 2020 primary candidate, acknowledged that with hindsight, the party may have fared better had Biden stepped aside. However, he emphasized the importance of focusing forward rather than dwelling on past missteps, urging readiness for the party’s next chapter.
The Democratic Party is trying to shift focus to Republican proposals they say endanger the economy and social programs. Still, Biden’s lingering influence complicates that shift. His recent media appearances defending his record have prompted mixed responses within the party, especially among those looking to turn the page.
Senator Dick Durbin supported Biden’s decision to respond to Trump’s repeated attacks, calling his actions understandable. He noted that Biden’s assertiveness post-presidency is unusual but justified given the gravity of accusations and misinformation circulating in the media landscape.
Former DNC chair Jaime Harrison expressed frustration with Democrats who now criticize Biden after failing to challenge him when it mattered. He labeled such actions opportunistic, stating that if they truly believed he was unfit, they should have spoken out during the election, not after its conclusion.
Veteran political strategist David Axelrod agreed Biden’s aides were likely acting from loyalty, but still called their decision irresponsible. He also criticized Biden’s family for allowing him to continue when it was clear his age was becoming a major liability in public perception.
As attention turns to 2028, new Democratic contenders will have to answer for their past positions on Biden. While some, like Governor JB Pritzker, defended Biden’s mental sharpness, others brace for scrutiny. Meanwhile, Jill Biden staunchly defended her husband, saying he worked tirelessly and remained capable until the end.
