Ex-Ukrainian Official Assassinated in Spain Amid Rising Political Violence

Andriy Portnov, once a high-ranking figure in Ukraine’s pro-Russian administration, was gunned down near Madrid, Spain, under mysterious and violent circumstances. Portnov, 51, served as a key aide to ex-President Viktor Yanukovych and was widely regarded as an influential political operator with deep legal ties. Spanish authorities confirmed he was fatally shot on Wednesday morning while entering a vehicle near an international school.

The brazen attack took place outside The American School of Madrid, located in the affluent suburb of Pozuelo de Alarcon. Several gunmen ambushed Portnov around 9:15 a.m. local time and shot him multiple times in the head and back before fleeing into a wooded area nearby. Police swiftly sealed off the site and began a search for the suspects.

The school, which enrolls over 1,000 students from various countries including the United States and Spain, went into precautionary lockdown. Administrators alerted parents and reassured them that no students had been harmed. One source close to the school said the victim was believed to be the father of one of the students, heightening concern among the parent community.

Portnov's political legacy in Ukraine is highly controversial. He held several powerful roles under President Yanukovych, including deputy chief of staff and head of judicial reforms. After the 2014 Maidan uprising that removed Yanukovych, Portnov fled Ukraine, only returning in 2019 before leaving again following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

He was targeted by international sanctions due to allegations of corruption. In 2021, the U.S. Treasury sanctioned Portnov under the Magnitsky Act for allegedly using his political clout to manipulate Ukraine’s courts. Canada imposed similar sanctions in 2014, freezing his assets for what they deemed corrupt advisory roles to the Yanukovych regime.

Portnov was never formally sanctioned by the Ukrainian government, despite mounting pressure from civil society. In December 2024, a public petition backed by 25,000 signatures urged the government to take action, citing Portnov’s harassment of journalists and alleged judicial interference. However, the Ukrainian Cabinet rejected the petition, citing lack of legal grounds.

He attracted criticism for releasing personal data of journalists from RFE/RL who were investigating his ties to Ukrainian institutions. These actions were viewed as attempts to intimidate the press and hinder transparency. Portnov remained defiant and combative in public statements, often accusing opponents of political vendettas.

The assassination evokes memories of other mysterious deaths tied to Yanukovych’s circle. In 2015, two men with connections to the former president were found dead in Kyiv, sparking conspiracy theories about political retribution. Several other former party members reportedly died by suicide in the years following Yanukovych’s ouster.

Spain itself has witnessed political violence tied to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In 2022, a letter bomb exploded at Ukraine’s embassy in Madrid, followed by similar threats to the Spanish prime minister. A Spanish man was arrested in connection with those attacks, accused of attempting to sow fear and disrupt Spain’s pro-Ukraine stance.

The killing of Portnov adds a chilling chapter to the ongoing saga of post-Yanukovych political unrest. His death, though occurring on foreign soil, underscores the lasting impact of Ukraine’s struggle between reform and corruption, East and West, and the high price that some, even in exile, continue to pay.
