Skies of Dispute: Japan-China Island Conflict Spills into the Air

In a fresh wave of diplomatic friction, Japan and China have accused one another of violating airspace over contested islands in the East China Sea, further straining relations between the two countries.

Japan reacted strongly after a Chinese helicopter was seen taking off from a coast guard ship and flying within its territorial airspace near the Senkaku Islands, which Japan controls but China claims.

Calling the act a serious violation, Japan’s Foreign Ministry issued a formal protest and demanded that China implement preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future.

The Japanese Self-Defense Forces deployed fighter jets in response to the helicopter's presence, a move consistent with their policy of responding swiftly to airspace breaches.

Meanwhile, China accused Japan of infringing on its airspace, claiming a Japanese civilian aircraft flew near the islands it refers to as Diaoyu. The Chinese Embassy condemned the move as a grave sovereignty violation.

China’s Coast Guard reported that it deployed a helicopter to warn off the Japanese plane, insisting that the response was both lawful and necessary.

Officials in Tokyo are now examining whether the helicopter’s entry was connected to the civilian aircraft’s activity. This is the first reported airspace breach by a Chinese helicopter since August’s violation near Nagasaki.
